Face the Facts” provides an opportunity for persons to hear another side to the many misconceptions that are held and moulded by the popular media. Here the reader can read articles of this nature, voice his own comments or enquire regarding more information.
I am 82 years of age. In my late teens I became an evolutionist because I could not make sense out of the Bible. I had been taught that God was a God of love and a lover of justice, but the teachings of “hellfire” and “Trinity” seemed to me to contradict this fact and were totally unreasonable. Like most people I had heard that the Bible had been copied many times and therefore was full of errors and that much of it was myth. Popular wisdom said that it was good enough for the old days but that modern knowledge had rendered it obsolete.
One day I was introduced to someone who was studying with Jehovah’s witnesses as an Evolutionist, who promptly asked me to explain how an eye could have evolved. I was staggered. It did not take me long to realize that an eye could never have been formed by random modifications. How would “Natural Selection”, the unintelligent mechanism responsible for the selection of the acquired characteristics required in evolution, know which characteristics to select in order to form an eye?
I now knew that evolution was wrong, but needed to examine the structure that it was built on. The more I looked into the matter, the more I realized that it was based on unprovable assumptions and was only accepted by people because their churches had not taught them the truth about the Bible and how it was written. Lack of knowledge had led to a breakdown of faith in the Bible. As the only alternative explanation is evolution, this becomes easily acceptable because it is believed that scientists , who are regarded as objective analysts are supposed to believe in it.
I began a systematic study of the Bible with Jehovah’s witnesses who appeared to me to be the only ones who had made an exhaustive study of the Bible. I know that contrary to what people were being told that witnesses do not twist the scriptures to suit themselves. They use a method of study used by Jesus himself that is mentioned in Luke 24:27. The method consists of comparing scriptures throughout the Bible with one another and accepting the meaning that harmonizes them all. The harmony decides the meaning not Jehovah’s witnesses.
Here is a typical example of how they study the Bible. This is a quotation from the publication “Reasoning from the scriptures” In a discussion on the Holy spirit and to resolve the question of whether the Holy Spirit is a person or not we read:-
Does the Bible teach that the “Holy Spirit” is a person?
“Some individual texts that refer to the holy spirit (“Holy Ghost,” KJ) might seem to indicate personality. For example, the holy spirit is referred to as a helper (Greek, pa·ra?kle·tos; “Comforter,” KJ; “Advocate,” JB, NE) that ‘teaches,’ ‘bears witness,’ ‘speaks’ and ‘hears.’ (John 14:16, 17, 26; 15:26; 16:13) But other texts say that people were “filled” with holy spirit, that some were ‘baptized’ with it or “anointed” with it. (Luke 1:41; Matt. 3:11; Acts 10:38) These latter references to holy spirit definitely do not fit a person. To understand what the Bible as a whole teaches, all these texts must be considered. What is the reasonable conclusion? That the first texts cited here employ a figure of speech personifying God’s holy spirit, his active force, as the Bible also personifies wisdom, sin, death, water, and blood. (See also pages 380, 381, under the heading “Spirit.”)”
The New Catholic Encyclopedia admits: “The majority of N[ew] T[estament] texts reveal God’s spirit as something, not someone; this is especially seen in the parallelism between the spirit and the power of God.” (1967, Vol. XIII, p. 575)
Notice that they consider all the scriptures and not just proof texts and then allow the scripture to supply the meaning.
My Studies have also made me realize that the breakdown we see today, had been predicted and can be attributed in a large way to the neglect of the churches in building faith and knowledge into their members. That is why I hope by means of this website to stir up the thinking of honest persons that are disturbed by present conditions.
