The 2nd Law of Thermodynamics

The universe is running down. Scientists have observed that in every sphere of life, there is a tendency in nature for things to deteriorate. Order proceeds to disorder. This process has been defined as the 1^st and 2^nd laws of thermodynamics. To illustrate the law in application, we can consider a building. If the building is left to itself the natural forces of the universe will gradually reduce the building to a pile of rubble and if given enough time to mere dust. The life of the building can only be prolonged by the input of effort and energy to maintain the building.

However in time even this succumbs to the laws of thermodynamics because those maintaining the building are also subject to these laws and themselves deteriorate and die.

The Search for Spontaneous Generation

Recently it is apparent that evolutionists have devised a new theory that they would like to include as a sort of a 3rd law of thermodynamics. This addition  is supposed to bring produce order out of disorder. This add-on is called the “law of maximum entropy production” or “MEP. ” My comment is that what they really have to explain is  how order came out of nothing.   The fact that the universe had a beginning shows that the universe had been created.  But evolutionists ignore the facts and desperately look for theories to deny the facts of science. The search for spontaneous generation is an old one.

Spontaneous generation—the notion that life could arise spontaneously from nonliving matter—was a prevailing belief in the middle ages. Finally, in the 17th century, Italian physician Francesco Redi proved that maggots appeared in rotten meat only after flies had laid eggs on it. No maggots developed on meat that flies could not reach. If animals as big as flies did not just appear on their own, what about the microbes that kept appearing in food—covered or not? Although later experiments indicated that microbes did not arise spontaneously, the issue remained controversial. Then came the work of Louis Pasteur.

Many people recall Pasteur’s work in solving problems related to fermentation and to infectious disease. He also performed experiments to determine whether tiny life-forms could arise by themselves. As you may have read, Pasteur demonstrated that even minute bacteria did not form in sterilized water protected from contamination. In 1864 he announced: “Never will the doctrine of spontaneous generation recover from the mortal blow struck by this simple experiment.” That statement remains true. No experiment has ever produced life from nonliving matter. Yet scientist still have never given up trying to muster theories to nullify the conclusions derived from that experiment. So far the 1st and 2nd laws have proved worthy of being called laws because so far no example has ever been found that contradicts these laws,  however we shall have to wait and see whether this new theory stands up to the test of  time so that it can be counted worthy of being called a law. It will have to do better than the so-called law of the “survival of the fittest, “  This so-called  law has been accepted as a law although it has never been proved to be a law. The fittest may only exist in a particular locality wheras other loclities may favor other variations, so really which  is the fittest to survive.

Astronomy’s Contribution

Scientific observations of the universe reveal that it is expanding. By tracing the path of the expansion back in time, the inevitable conclusion is arrived at that an explosion of matter occurred at the beginning. This has been named “The Big Bang theory”.

As this explosion constitutes the beginning of the universe, the cause, whatever it is lies outside the universe itself and is therefore not necessarily subject to its operational laws. For matter to miraculously appear in space operating in accord with the 1^st and 2^nd laws of thermodynamics, imply that somehow there must exist an enormous source of energy outside the universe that in some way converted energy to matter, and so began it all. This can only be called “creation” and implies the existence of a supreme being whom we would refer to as God.

The logic of this conclusion is inescapable.  If there was nothing for eternity then there could be no reason whatsoever why matter should suddenly appear. There has to be a cause outside the universe capable of making a decision to create. A decision can only be made by an intelligent being and because of the enormity of creation; the being must be an incredible source of energy and power.

In an attempt to bypass this conclusion some evolutionary scientists have attempted to propose what they call the “oscillating theory” This theory ignores the 1^st and 2^nd laws of thermodynamics and suggests that the universe is infinite. If the two laws are upheld the oscillation must slowly decrease until it stops altogether. Scientists tested the theory, by checking the speed of the expansion of the universe. The oscillating theory states that the rate of expansion is slowing down due to gravity and that ultimately it will stop and start compressing again until we have another big bang. Unfortunately for these scientists, it has been discovered that the rate of expansion is increasing and not slowing down as predicted. This means the demise of the oscillating theory. We are therefore left with the only logical conclusion. There has to be a supreme creator whom we call God.

How does this affect our view of lives?

Well we will now consider some scientific facts that affect our understanding of life.

It is a fact that all humans, no matter of what race can interbreed and are therefore related. Furthermore humans reproduce and so the population is continually increasing. By going back into the past we face the inevitable conclusion that we have all descended from one common ancestor, the first man. The Bible calls that man Adam. Women are similarly related to men. Both similarly start as a single cell and it is only the small genetic difference that decides whether one is a man or a woman. This fact harmonizes with the Bible statement that the first woman was constructed from a part of the first man. The Bible calls the first two persons Adam and Eve. Therefore there is no scientific reason why the Bible’s account of Adam and Eve should be regarded as mythical.

In harmony with the 1^st and 2^nd laws of thermodynamics, humans also deteriorate and ultimately die. According to the Bible this could have been prevented, but how?

The Bible shows that the first humans lived to great ages. Adam himself lived for almost a thousand years. For the first 1,600 years all humans had long life spans. After the flood of Noah’s day ages decreased to about 300 and then later to about 70 or 80 years. This is exactly what the 1^st and 2^nd laws would predict. Science has since managed to slow down the depreciation largely due to medicine and surgery, in other words by a scientifically designed maintenance program. This also harmonizes with the 1^st and 2^nd law. The natural forces of the universe damage the genetic structure over a period of time and so humans deteriorate and ultimately die. However science has succeeded in somewhat slowing down this process.

Why the First Humans died.

According to the Bible God told the first man that if he disobeyed God’s commands he would die. Now just as it is scientifically possible for the effects of the running down processes to be slowed by work and energy in a maintenance program, with regard to a building, it should be easy for the creator to counterbalance the running down process by imputing energy and work into his creation. Similarly he can do the same for man. The question is why should he maintain and re-energise a person who will not obey his commands.

To illustrate this principle, a manufacturer may guarantee a product provided it is used in a certain way. He supplies the instructions in a manual with a warning that he will not uphold the guarantee if the owner disobeys the instruction. In Adam’s case, Adam was not immortal. He still had to eat, sleep and be careful. Our creator was prepared to look after him if he obeyed, but he was warned that disobedience would lead to his death. This would be because the Creator would not feel obligated to care for someone who was disobedient and so the 1^st and 2^nd law would prevail. Because Adam was created perfect this took quite a long time, nearly a thousand years.

All of this is scientifically plausible because as we have already demonstrated the universe has to have a creator who exists outside the universe and is not subject to the laws that govern it. Anyone who could create a complicated universe like ours would certainly be capable of making any adjustments necessary to maintain it.

We Need More  Than Science.

Now we come to the question of why humanity is in such a sorry state and what this means to us. It becomes obvious that we can only learn a limited amount of information regarding our Creator by studying his creation. The variety of foods, the beautiful settings, the ability to arrange sounds into mathematical patterns that can bring joy to us, the fact of stereoscopic vision and stereophonic hearing all testifies to a Creator who wishes his creation to be happy. However if we want to learn more about his purposes it would be necessary for him to communicate this information to his intelligent creation.

This is where the Bible enters the picture. Any information of this nature would have to have existed from the beginning, because all humans would have needed it. The only successful candidate could therefore be the Bible. It pre-dates all religious literature available. The Bible has been preserved in thousands of manuscripts meticulously copied by hand in various languages over thousands of years.  This testifies to the trust and confidence that the best of men have put in it. Furthermore, the honest portrayal of the leading characters and Bible writers, the disclosure of their faults, all testify to its truthfulness and trustworthiness.

What the Bible Tells Us about Creation

Now the Bible tells us that long before the material universe was created, God created other forms of life. Because they existed before the universe it follows that they are also not subject to the laws of the universe. These life forms were called spirit forms because they are invisible and yet are real and can exert power.

The Bible indicates that man was made reflecting certain qualities that God has like love, a sense of justice, power over the lower creation because of our superior intellect, and the ability to arrive at wise decisions because we are able through the power of imagination to mentally see where a course of action may take us. Yet we also have the power to exercise free will and that means that we can also base a decision on what we desire rather than on what would be best for us.

The Bible indicates that after God had given his instructions to the first man, the man communicated these instructions to his wife, Eve.  At this point it appears that one of these spirit creatures who later was called the Devil (which means slanderer) intervened by slandering God, accusing him of lying to the humans for selfish reasons. This attack also implied that being obedient to the Devil rather than God would also be more beneficial to the humans.

For selfish reasons, the woman chose to believe the lie, although she had no reason to doubt God’s motives. Her choice put pressure on the man and so he joined with her in her rebellion. The result was catastrophic. The moral qualities of our creator had been brought into question before all his intelligent creation. How was he to handle the situation?  Would he exert his awesome power and destroy the rebels? Justice demanded that they be destroyed for their actions but would that clear the slander from his name? No! it would not.

For all intelligent creatures both spiritual and human to live in harmony and peace there has to be trust in one another and especially in our creator. God therefore decided to allow Satan (which means adversary) to prove his slanderous accusations. The humans had chosen to put their trust in Satan, so now he allowed Satan the opportunity to be their God and allow him the opportunity to exercise his rulership over them. God knew that Satan would fail to work for their good. This is where the name of God comes into the picture. The Bible shows that God revealed his personal name to the first humans. The common English pronunciation of the name is JEHOVAH. This name was important for us to know as other false Gods had come into existence. There must be no confusion as to who was the true God. Jehovah knew that the failure of Satan to succeed in his rulership would vindicate his name and sovereignty, proving that Jehovah God was the only one qualified to be the only rightful sovereign of the universe.

When Jesus was under test this rulership was attested to by the Devil  himself and Jesus never contested it.

(Luke 4:5-8) ⁵ So he brought him up and showed him all the kingdoms of the inhabited earth in an instant of time; ⁶ and the Devil said to him: “I will give you all this authority and the glory of them, because it has been delivered to me, and to whomever I wish I give it. ⁷ You, therefore, if you do an act of worship before me, it will all be yours.” ⁸ In reply Jesus said to him: “It is written, ‘It is Jehovah your God you must worship, and it is to him alone you must render sacred service.’”

(2 Corinthians 4:3-4) . . .If, now, the good news we declare is in fact veiled, it is veiled among those who are perishing, ⁴ among whom the god of this system of things has blinded the minds of the unbelievers, that the illumination of the glorious good news about the Christ, who is the image of God, might not shine through.

These facts explain why the history of the world has been marked by failure in every sphere. Satan has had men try out every kind of government and all have failed to benefit mankind. Satan has been bound to show that his methods are superior to God’s. He has used deception, force, coercion, and violence to achieve his goals. The world reflects these qualities.

Of course the offspring of Adam and Eve have been forced into this world through no fault of their own. Having inherited defective bodies from their forefathers they have been unable to measure up to God’s requirements through no fault of there own. From God’s point of view they are in a pitiful condition and he has therefore felt the need to make some provision for them.

God’s Remedy For The Tragedy

As a God of justice he cannot just sanction their sinfulness even though they are imperfect. He has therefore provided a means of reconciling them to himself, but at great cost to himself.

The principle of justice that he used was basically the idea of a ransom.

Adam the perfect man had within his body the seed of the whole human race.

As a perfectly obedient man he could pass on to his offspring the perfection that he had, but as a sinner he could only pass on to his offspring his own imperfection. We, the children of a sinful Adam have inherited this imperfection and therefore cannot measure up to God’s standards of righteousness.

The Bible reveals that God’s firstborn spirit son, the one who most precious to him voluntarily agreed to being used to repurchase these rights for mankind.

How? Jehovah performed a miracle. He transferred the perfect life and identity of this son to a cell placed in the womb of a woman. Jehovah protected the embryo from the contamination of imperfection until the child was born. Not being tainted with the sins of mankind and having God for his father he was in a similar position to the first man Adam. Adam was also a human son of God.

This son of God who was called Jesus grew up and remained perfectly obedient with respect to the laws of God. When he reached manhood, he  voluntarily presented himself to God to accomplish the ransoming task. During his ministry on earth he used the opportunity to teach and set an example of Godly devotion that could become a pattern for others to follow.

Finally he was hatefully executed by wicked evil men and so provided the ransom sacrifice needed to satisfy the scales of justice. Because he had always been faithful in the spirit realm God resurrected him once again as a spirit person. Although he had sacrificed his human life he still possessed the right to have a perfect human family. Not being human he could not physically father a human race but could acquire such by adoption. By proving by their conduct now, although imperfect, that if they were perfect they would serve God flawlessly, humans can qualify for adoption. Jesus can adopt them as his earthly children and thus become their “Eternal Father”.

(Isaiah 9:6) ⁶ For there has been a child born to us, there has been a son given to us; and the princely rule will come to be upon his shoulder. And his name will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Eternal Father, Prince of Peace.

Although this exposition may sound religious it is fundamentally based on sound scientific reasoning. Our Creator, the source of all dynamic energy produced a material universe. Being outside this universe and therefore not bound by its laws, he is able to make whatever adjustments are necessary to accomplish his purpose. The 1^st and 2^nd laws of thermodynamics apply to closed systems. All systems are in turn part, of a larger system. The universe itself is a closed system and therefore these laws apply within it and not necessarily outside it.

The Adam and Eve Story is consistent with the facts and the reliability of the Bible accounts is the only logical, reasonable explanation for atrocities that are being committed today. The theory of evolution which relies on the apparent similarity of structures in living creatures as proof is not valid because.

1  It has no explanation for the creation of the universe.

2. similarity of structure does not constitute proof of evolution but merely that similar usages can have similar designs.

For example the fact that a bicycle has two wheels does not prove that motor cars have evolved from bicycles. It merely shows similar design features.

Evolution has no answer to our problems but the Bible has answers. Many persons however are confused because of the many different religions that claim to use the Bible as a basis and yet differ in beliefs and practices.

Many  Religions have Accepted Evolution as being Harmonious with the Bible.

This indicates that their Bible understanding is too limited to be the truth.

The Bible clearly shows that all living creatures and plants were created according to their kinds. This is a scientifically accurate statement. To Illustrate:- There are many different kinds of dogs in the dog kind. They can all interbreed. However dogs never become cats. And cats never become dogs neither will they interbreed. Evolution says they are all related, and therefore they should all be able to interbreed. Evolution is therefore revealed as an unscientific theory whereas the Bible account is in harmony with true science

For us as individuals it becomes necessary to cut through the web of lies and confusion to arrive at the truth. False religion says that the Bible can be interpreted in many ways. The fact is that if private interpretation is used one will soon find the Bible contradicting itself. This is what any document would do if misused in this way. Like any other document the Bible has to be understood in a way where it does not contradict itself. To do this it is necessary to study it topically and allow scripture to explain scripture. This is the method that Jesus used to explain the Bible.

(Luke 24:27) ²⁷ And commencing at Moses and all the Prophets he interpreted to them things pertaining to himself in all the Scriptures.

(Luke 24:32) . . .And they said to each other: “Were not our hearts burning as he was speaking to us on the road, as he was fully opening up the Scriptures to us?. . .

“Moses and all the Prophets” referred to the whole Bible. The subject was “the Messiah” By finding all the relevant scriptures on the subject the disciples were able to arrive at a harmonious understanding of the whole subject.

The only people that use this method of study are Jehovah’s witnesses and that is why they are well known for their Bible knowledge.

To accurately find what one must do to benefit from bible knowledge I suggest a home Bible study with them.
