The Universe—Accident or Design?

Have you ever put a jigsaw puzzle together? When trying to fit one of the pieces into the puzzle, have you found that it was sometimes difficult, because so many of the other pieces looked similar? You found that the best way to select the correct piece was by seeing it in relation to the picture as a whole. In this way you saw how this particular piece fitted into the large picture.
.
Evolutionists in general, view life as a war for survival. Life is viewed as a struggle to survive, however is this really so? Perhaps they should look at the bigger picture.

Photographs are sometimes shown to prove that animals are fighting one another to survive but is this so?
Consider that most animals move around in herds. They are not competing with each other but are cooperating for mutual benefit. When we see buck fighting amongst themselves, it is not to survive but merely to establish leadership rights. The herds instinctively follow leaders and operate as an organized body but need some way to establish who their leaders are. Once the leader is established they cooperate with the leader. When a leader becomes too old a younger one will challenge his right as ruler and sometimes take his place. It all depends on how you look at nature.

Likewise with the existence of predators, they don’t actually compete with one another. They mark their territory and generally respect the territory rights of other predators. They do this instinctively without employing lawyers to fight for their rights. There function in the big picture is to act as a check on the over-population of the animals that they feed on.

Predators usually have fewer offspring than the animals that they feed on. This establishes a balance in nature. If the animals they feed on were allowed to reproduce unchecked they would eventually wipe themselves out though overgrazing. The earth cannot support unlimited growth so predators keep the numbers of the animals they feed on within reasonable limits. Death itself ensures that the earth’s soil never becomes depleted. This cycle is a form of cooperation between animals and the earth itself.

Cooperation not Competition

When once one accepts the evidence that the universe has been created, it becomes easy to see the cooperation in nature. It is the anti-creator bias of evolutionists that blinds them to the obvious. The forces in the universe cooperate and do not compete.

(Romans 8:28) . . .Now we know that God makes all his works cooperate together for the good of those who love God, .

Humans and animals require food and oxygen. When we breathe we inhale oxygen and exhale carbon dioxide. If this continued, we would ultimately exhaust our oxygen supply, or even poison ourselves by drowning in the carbon dioxide that we exhale. However, we are fortunate enough to have the cooperation of the vegetation, which furnishes us with a generous supply of oxygen and also supplies us with food. The carbon dioxide that we exhale also serves a useful purpose because it serves the plant life. This cycle is a wonderful example of how nature works in harmony, with itself with one kind of life cooperating with another kind of life for mutual benefit. This is not “the survival of the fittest” principle in action rather an example of the cooperation in nature.

The flavors found in fruit and vegetables are certainly not a survival characteristic as this characteristic invites their destruction and is the reason why we eat them.

If evolution was true then we might ask which came first, plants or animals? Did plants change into animals? The evolutionary changes are supposed to be without boundaries? What food would animals feed on while they were evolving organs to handle vegetation as food? How could animals survive before the plants helped balance the atmosphere?

The Bible shows that vegetation was created and served a useful purpose long before animals were created. Vegetation aided in the production of the earth’s atmosphere, by absorbing the carbon gases and providing the oxygen which animals and humans needed. Before vegetation the atmosphere must have been far more poisonous because of the carbon gases arising from the many volcanoes around during the formation of the land-mass. (See my article on the “The Scientific Accuracy of Genesis”

How about Balance?

Can the balance in nature be brought about randomly, by chance? Is not the balance in nature evidence of design? How can checks and balance form by chance? Each of these checks are for a purpose. Purpose testifies to design. Purpose is the product of a mind and never caused by accident.

Humans also require food to supply the fuel for their bodies but is it necessary for life to have the large variety of tasty fruits. The only valid purpose is to give us pleasure. Do evolutionists takes this into account? How does natural selection decide how to produce these flavors? If humans were able to make these fruits they would have to be brilliant chemists. Can you and I find any fault with these delicious flavours? How could a blind force like evolution decide which flavors were desirable? Lucky us.
Some plants have terrible odors and these attract insects that thrive on decay. How does evolution know which flavor insects prefer and which chemicals to use in producing these flavors? All these creations have a purpose and supply a place in the ecology. The existence of these plants and the fact that they generally feed on insects, is another way of achieving a balance in nature.

Humans and animals use the vegetation as their main source of food. Is it not fortunate for us that vegetation draws the chemical ingredients from the soil and converts these ingredients into a form that animals and humans can assimilate and enjoy. Lucky us.

How could we manage without this cooperation in nature?

The seasons also serve a useful purpose. During the winter months the land is usually well-watered and is ideal for the growth of vegetation. In spring everything starts flowering. What is the purpose of beauty in flowers? What is the survival value of beauty in flowers? See how the insects cooperate with the flowers for their mutual benefit. The insects fertilize flowers and in turn feed on the nectar within them. How does evolution know what insects like?

Consider the design of this butterfly’s wings. Ask your self how random forces could produce a design like this? Apparently the colorful designs are produced by millions of tiny colored feathers. Random placement of these feathers would result in a mixture of colors. However the colorful feathers are purposefully placed in just the right places to produce the beautiful complementary patterns on the two wings. How does natural selection accomplish this feat? How does it remember to duplicate the design on both wings? How can chance produce this pattern? Remember that other butterflies produce different patterns. Surely anyone that imagines that artistic patterns like these can be produced by chance is practicing self-deception.

Design in the Butterfly

Plants are rooted to their position, so insects aid them to spread their seed. With the arrival of summer everything dries out and dies, enriching the soil by sending the chemistry in plants back to the soil. Other insects and bacteria help in the process of decay by converting masses of rotting vegetation into rich soil. Humans even use the various bacteria to purify water at sewage disposal sites by breaking down the  unhealthy waste. In this way we show that we recognize the useful purpose of the tiny creatures in nature. This is another example of the cooperation in nature. Animals also cooperate by their deaths so as to once again replenish what was removed from the soil. These cycles are all important for the smooth functioning of the world around us..
It appears that when nature is left to itself everything cooperates for the apparent purpose of preserving life and for the stabilization of the universe.

How about the inanimate universe? The “Dead Sea” is dead because of its saltiness. The saltiness is caused by the dissolving of salts in the waters that flow into the “Dead Sea”. The Dead Sea is not actually a sea. It is just a lake that has no outlet to the sea. That is why the salt accumulates. Even salt has beneficial value to animal life. Similarly our oceans are also salty. However the sea is not dead. Many different forms of life live in the sea and have been designed to deal with their environment. The sea is oxygenated in various ways. One of the ways that it is oxygenated is by the action of tides that are in turn caused by the gravitational effect of the moon and the sun. This is another example of the universe cooperating for mutual benefit.  Our sun raises large quantities of pure water into the atmosphere. The wind patterns move this water in the form of clouds over the land where it falls as rain, supplying the fresh water that the land and the creatures on land need for their existence. In this way all nature cooperates for the happy existence of all life. We are surely lucky to have all this purposeful assistance. Does this cooperation sound like “survival of the fittest.”

There are many other examples of cooperation in nature. Different ants like drones and worker ants cooperate and work together for the benefit of the community. This cooperation works for a common purpose. Likewise bees cooperate and work together for the benefit of the hive. They make honey which serves as a food for some animals and humans as well.

(Proverbs 30:27) . . .the locusts have no king, and yet they go forth all of them divided into groups. . .

It has been shown that humans farm land and plant large single crops, which are then easily destroyed by some pest or other. When crops are intelligently planted, it has been found that a balance is achieved because certain plants provide protection for other plants from insects that could become  pests. These pests  are discouraged from attacking the crops. Large areas of land have been turned into deserts by humans because of mismanagement, whereas in the wild state the vegetation flourishes.

If humans knew enough they could work along with nature.
I suggest that readers consider the excellent DVD “The privileged planet” produced by “Illustria Media” which shows how wonderfully privileged our planet is to have all these purposeful features that make for pleasant living.. A new DVD can be obtained from the Watchtower society entitled “The Wonders of Creation Reveal God’s Glory”. It can be obtained without charge and one is merely invited to make a small contribtion toward their worldwide work. These wonderful examples of design in nature prove without a doubt to any reasonable thinking person that the universe is the product of intelligent design rather than a series of accidents. Decisions and design are the characteristics of a designer with personality and never the product of chance,

If one examines that DVD one will find many other examples of cooperation in the universe rather than the competition which the “survival of the fittest: theory seems to suggest.

An examination of the way the universe is run indicates that because the 2nd law of thermodynamics is seen to apply some sort of “checks and balances” are required to maintain the universe. If the universe has to exist to time indefinite then our creator would need to maintain it. He certainly has the power to accomplish this.

Evolutionists see the world as a war for survival. This is their error. Because of the materialistic nature of their philosophy they neglect to see the big picture. The big picture is of a universe designed by God with all the balances and checks required to maintain a balance. That is why  everything in the universe cooperates for mutual benefit.

This is the way that God runs the universe. If peace, unity and harmony are to be achieved all creation has to cooperate with God. Man is no exception. God originally created us to fulfill a constructive role in the universe. By creating us with free will and giving us his mandate to have in subjection and exercise dominion over the earth, it is obvious that humans were appointed as caretakers of the earth, but were expected to do so under God’s direction.

(Genesis 1:26-28) . . .And God went on to say: “Let us make man in our image, according to our likeness, and let them have in subjection the fish of the sea and the flying creatures of the heavens and the domestic animals and all the earth and every moving animal that is moving upon the earth.” 27 And God proceeded to create the man in his image, in God’s image he created him; male and female he created them. 28 Further, God blessed them and God said to them: “Be fruitful and become many and fill the earth and subdue it, and have in subjection the fish of the sea and the flying creatures of the heavens and every living creature that is moving upon the earth.

The upsetting of the ecology and the selfish use of earth’s resources prove that humans are not fulfilling the purpose that God designed them for today. Philosophies like the evolution theory have only served to cause humankind to compete instead of cooperating for the benefit of all. This independent spirit that started with Adam and Eve listening to the voice of a rebellious spirit son of God has resulted in all the sorrow and unhappiness that humans have experienced down the centuries.

One may ask why God has permitted this to occur? The reason is that God maintains unity in the universe by setting a wonderful example of trustworthiness and reliability. His intelligent creation trust him to always be true and righteous in his way of handling matters. Therefore  it became necessary for God to establish a legal precedent in his handling of this rebellion. Because he was accused of lying to the first humans and because his way of ruling the universe was challenged, he has permitted his accuser the maximum time to show that his accuser and independent humans  could run matters on their own better than he could. The present failure, after thousands of years of experimentation to produce a harmonious, peaceful and happy world of mankind bears witness to the entire intelligent universe that only God’s way can work. In this way a legal precedent was set which means that God need never allow any rebellions to take place again. That is why the time is rapidly approaching for God to once again take charge and restore peace and unity to the world. All rebellion will be removed and because of the legal precedent it will never be allowed to occur again.

However, because God recognizes that many persons have been deceived, therefore he  is patient and prefers to give all an opportunity to come around to his way of thinking before destroying the rebels..

In summary we can see that one of the reasons why God has allowed rebellion to exist for a time, is for the purpose of allowing the intelligent creation to see the disastrous results of disobedience. This lack of cooperation on the part of those who desire unlimited freedom, has resulted in the unhappy conditions that mankind finds itself in today. Crime, war, poverty greed, starvation, and many other unhappy results including sickness and death have resulted from God withdrawing his protection from the human race and allowing humans to go their own way independent of his direction. This has been a very expensive education. Both the spirit world and the material world have been affected in this way. Evolution has contributed in full measure by teaching humans that the “survival of the fittest” is a law of nature. In doing this they have justified selfish behavior, war, crime, and the greedy exploitation of the poor. They have depreciated the value of life in general and looked to animal behavior as a model for human behavior.

Our creator Jehovah God has set us a perfect example of generosity, because of the many gifts he has given to mankind. He created the first humans with the ability to appreciate and use all the high qualities that he himself possesses. He has set us an example in his way of doing things. The Bible shows us how God views matters and armed with his viewpoint, we can live happier and more full lives

Is the universe the product of blind accident as evolutionists propose or rather does the cooperation and balances within it not rather testify that is was created and designed by the almighty God.

This article has been written to establish the way God’s rules the universe. Not by competition but by cooperation. It is necessary for persons who recognize this cooperation, and desire to cooperate with God to gain accurate knowledge of his purposes.
