The Outline of This Article

In this article I am going to discuss certain words in the Bible which bear on the subject of the origin of life.
Next, I am going to use an illustration which we will look at in detail and finally we will see how this all helps to explain what life is and how it operates
Finally we will look at evolution and the Bible to see which has a better explanation. You will then be the judge and able to decide what you choose to believe in.

The Meaning of Spirit

In the original manuscripts of the Bible there are two words that we need to consider. The original word in Hebrew is “ruah” which has a basic meaning of breath, wind or air in motion. Whenever the Greek writers translated the Hebrew into Greek they substituted the Greek word “pneuma” for the Hebrew word “ruah.”  Both these words, therefore take the same meaning and  are translated into English as “spirit.” Air or the wind is invisible to the eye but can be detected by seeing what it does, so therefore the English word “spirit,’” can be better understood to be an invisible active force.  It is invisible but we can see the effects that  it produces.  We cannot see air in motion but can feel it as a wind or breeze. Therefore a good general meaning for “spirit” would be “an invisible active force.”

When we  speak of the spirit realm, we refer to a place unseen to human eyes, where spirit persons live and operate. These spirit persons are also invisible to human eyes and yet can exert power or apply force in various ways. The Bible refers to God and the angels as being spirit persons, because they are invisible and yet exert force.

(John 4:24) God is a Spirit, and those worshiping him must worship with spirit and truth.

(Psalm 104:4) . . .Making his angels spirits, His ministers a devouring fire.

Spirit can also refer to the life force operating in humans and animals because the life force is invisible and yet actively exerts force by keeping the person or animal alive. When the Bible speaks of man and the spirit of man it never refers to a spirit person residing inside the man. It usually  refers to the life force actuating man and animal. Animals and humans  are spoken of as all having the same life force or “spirit” within them.

(Ecclesiastes 3:19)  For there is an eventuality as respects the sons of mankind and an eventuality as respects the beast, and they have the same eventuality. As the one dies, so the other dies; and they all have but one spirit,. . .

Spirit can also be compared to the mental attitude of a person, describing the characteristic attitude of mind of the person.

(1 Peter 3:4) . . .but let it be the secret person of the heart in the incorruptible [apparel] of the quiet and mild spirit, which is of great value in the eyes of God. .

It can also refer to the general attitude or spirit that a person or a group of persons can display.

(1 Corinthians 2:12) . . .Now we received, not the spirit of the world, but the spirit ( the mental attitude) which is from God, that we might know the things that have been kindly given us by God.

Now bear this is mind, the word does not always refer to an invisible person but can refer to anything that has the characteristic of an “invisible active force” so when scripture speaks of Bible writers being inspired by God it is saying that God’s “invisible active force” is motivating, and guiding the Bible writer to write. God’s Holy spirit or active force is sometimes spoken of as God’s finger. This is logical, because just as we use our hands or fingers to do work God uses his projected active force to accomplish what he wishes to do.

(Exodus 31:18) . . .Now as soon as he had finished speaking with him on Mount Si´nai he proceeded to give Moses two tablets of the Testimony, tablets of stone written on by God’s finger.

By comparing the two following scriptures with one another we see that Jesus is shown speaking of God’s holy spirit as the “finger of God.” This is because the Bible writers understood  what Jesus was saying when he spoke of God’s finger. By comparing scripture with scripture, the harmony within the scriptures enables us to have an accurate understanding of its meaning.

(Luke 11:20) . . .But if it is by means of God’s finger I expel the demons, the kingdom of God has really overtaken YOU.

(Matthew 12:28) But if it is by means of God’s spirit that I expel the demons, the kingdom of God has really overtaken YOU.

Spirit the Life force

The important point for the purpose of this discussion is to understand that the life force in man and animals is called  “spirit” in the Bible.

(Ecclesiastes 3:19) For there is an eventuality as respects the sons of mankind and an eventuality as respects the beast, and they have the same eventuality. As the one dies, so the other dies; and they all have but one spirit,.

Now consider this illustration. When an evolutionists examines rocks retrieved from other planets, they will sometimes exclaim that they have discovered life.  Is this true”? No!.  All that they have discovered is the evidence of some of the chemistry usually associated with life. This fallacy is easily exposed. Say a man dies and within say a half and hour later his body is discovered. Have we discovered life? No! All we have discovered is a body that we assume once possessed life, but the life is now gone. Where did it go to? Evolutionists deceive themselves because they assume that if one puts the right combination of chemicals together you will automatically get life.  Will we get life this way? No! How do we no that we won’t get life this way? Because that dead man has all the right physical chemical elements already there. If one took a sample of his DNA it would have all the ingredients in it but it would still be dead. The Life force is gone. To understand this properly we will consider a fitting illustration.

The Power of Electricity

You go into your garage and see your car standing there. Is it alive? No! So you switch on the ignition and press the starter and nothing happens. What are you likely to suspect first? The battery, therefore you might make a few other tests like switching on the lights etc. to check. However if the battery is actually flat then the car will not operate.

Ok, so we put a brand new battery in the car and connect it up. When we switch on the ignition what we are doing is connecting the battery to the electrical system. Now if we switch the lights on, they light up. Why? Because the switch connects the lights to the battery via the electrical system. Similarly if we press the starter button, this connects the starter motor to the battery via the electrical system. The starter swings the engine.  Because the ignition system is connected to the battery via the electrical system, as the engine swings a spark is generated that ignites the petrol vapor in the cylinder. As this explodes it drives the pistons and the engine starts running.

However if you take out the battery none of the functions work any longer. The battery has been storing the energy that the car needs to run. This force called electricity is also invisible, exerts force and is stored in the battery.

Now consider our illustration of a dead body. Like the motorcar it is a machine. We can check it out. The chromosomes are all there, the cells are all there, all the body parts are there but like our car without the battery it is dead. What does it need? It needs the life force that the Bible calls spirit.

Man has been able to generate electricity by means of power stations and also is able to store electricity in batteries. In this way we can run all sorts of machines.  We can run a variety of machines like refrigerators, TV sets, electric stoves, computers and cell phones. These all use the same electrical force that has no personality of its own but produces different behavior patterns depending on the machine that it runs. That is exactly the way the spirit or life force works in living creatures. The spirit in living creatures has no personality but is the living force that causes all sorts of different living creatures to function and be alive. Just as a motor vehicle cannot operate without the  energy supplied by the battery, so all living creatures cannot operate without the presence of the the life force. They are all dead.

When We Die

We possess the knowledge and the ability to generate electrical power but we do not have the knowledge and ability to  generate the life force.  Both electricity and the life force are invisible active forces but they are also very different. We know much about electricity because we can generate it but know very little except what the Bible tells us about the life force and we cannot generate it.

When it comes to life we are helpless because we have not discovered how to generate this life force.  When a person dies all the materials necessary for life is there but the one important thing that is missing is the life force. For us to live it has to be supplied from a source outside of us.

Now the evolutionist is looking for life. He may think that he has discovered life when he finds something that may have at one time been alive, but he has not discovered life. This would not really matter except for the fact that the evolutionist believes that we don’t  need a battery or any alternative power source. The evolutionist believes that the life force will simply appear once we get the chemistry that make up living creatures. The fact that this is a fallacy is because a person that has just died, actually has all the chemistry present but the life force is what is missing and once that is gone we do not have the knowledge to put life into the body.

The evolutionists search for life is in the wrong direction. He feels that the chemistry that the body is composed of will eventually become alive but mankind has had thousands of years to see that that never happens. The body chemistry will simply decay without the life force to sustain it. We can prove this anytime. Take someone that has been killed, surgically repair the damage and now wait for the person to come to life. He won’t because the life force which the Bible calls spirit has gone and we do not have a source of the life force like a battery to bring it back to life.

Life only comes from life and this is a scientifically proven fact. A baby is conceived by an man and a woman. The impersonal life force or spirit is passed on through the mother to the embryo and promotes its growth until it is able to survive on its own in the outside world. Then it is expelled from the womb and can now survive while under the protective care of its parents. It may grow to maturity and then is able to protect itself but if for some reason or other the child or grownup is damaged and dies the parents are helpless, as they can no longer pass on their life force or spirit to the person. That power has gone back to God in the sense that He alone has the ability to put it into the person.  Living things at their creation had the life force put into them but  they only possess the ability to pass it on to their offspring at birth.  The ability to give life has gone back to God.  Evolution looks to chemistry to originate life and so far, although searching for evidence to support their theory for more than two centuries, they have failed to prove that this happens.

How the Bible Answers the Question

The Bible on the other hand gives us the knowledge as to what happens when we die and what is required if we are to live again. Notice that just as a machine that is dead has to reconnect to the power source to be running again,  so a dead human has to reconnect to the power source which  the Bible shows is God. This is what the following scripture teaches us because only God can once again enliven the creature.

(Ecclesiastes 12:7)  Then the dust returns to the earth just as it happened to be and the spirit itself returns to the [true] God who gave it.

Remember that the battery only stores the energy. In this case it is God that possesses the life force and in that sense he is the only one that can rekindle it.  Just as a motor vehicle will not operate if we remove the battery, so when we die because of machine failure,  we lose the life force and have no means of renewing it. God is the source of life.

(Psalm 36:9) . . .For with you is the source of life; By light from you we can see light.

The next scripture shows that just as God has life in himself, and is able to generate the life force, so he has given his son that privilege and that is why Jesus will be able to resurrect persons and maintain them. Jesus proved this by raising people from the dead.

(John 5:25-26) . . .“Most truly I say to YOU, The hour is coming, and it is now, when the dead will hear the voice of the Son of God and those who have given heed will live. 26 For just as the Father has life in himself, so he has granted also to the Son to have life in himself

(Job 33:4) . . .God’s own spirit made me, And the Almighty’s own breath proceeded to bring me to life.

((Isaiah 40:26) . . .“Raise YOUR eyes high up and see. Who has created these things? It is the One who is bringing forth the army of them even by number, all of whom he calls even by name. Due to the abundance of dynamic energy, he also being vigorous in power, not one [of them] is missing. . .

Jeremiah 2:12-13) . . .the utterance of Jehovah, 13 ‘because there are two bad things that my people have done: They have left even me, the source of living water, in order to hew out for themselves cisterns, broken cisterns, that cannot contain the water.’

Just like the people that Jeremiah was talking to, Jehovah has said that the evolutionists have left him,  the source of living water that can impart life and instead hewn out for themselves broken cisterns that cannot contain water.

Jesus has also been given the power to generate life and can say the same thing.

John 4:13-15) . . .In answer Jesus said to her: “Everyone drinking from this water will get thirsty again. 14 Whoever drinks from the water that I will give him will never get thirst (at all, but the water that I will give him will become in him a fountain of water bubbling up to impart everlasting life.” 15 The woman said to him: “Sir, give me this water, so that I may neither thirst nor keep coming over to this place to draw water.”

So in conclusion when evolutionists search for life they should look for the battery or power source. Examining dead or extinct life forms are no more help than looking at a dead body today and telling yourself that you have found life.

In the beginning when God created Adam and Eve, Satan the Devil one of God’s rebellious spirit sons tried to get their worship by lying to them. You might recall what he said to the woman.

(Genesis 3:1-5) . . .Now the serpent proved to be the most cautious of all the wild beasts of the field that Jehovah God had made. So it began to say to the woman: “Is it really so that God said YOU must not eat from every tree of the garden?” 2 At this the woman said to the serpent: “Of the fruit of the trees of the garden we may eat. 3 But as for [eating] of the fruit of the tree that is in the middle of the garden, God has said, ‘YOU must not eat from it, no, YOU must not touch it that YOU do not die.’” 4 At this the serpent said to the woman: “YOU positively will not die. 5 For God knows that in the very day of YOUR eating from it YOUR eyes are bound to be opened and YOU are bound to be like God, KNOWING good and bad.”

By analyzing this ;portion of scripture we see that in answer to the Devil’s apparently innocent question Eve explained that they were not to eat of the tree of “Knowledge of Good and Bad” or else they would die. This was basically a scientific truth. We are all apparently subject to the second law of thermodynamics.  To illustrate what I mean:- We all run down when exposed to the natural forces of the universe. The stars in the universe are at present converting matter into energy and will ultimately use up all the matter in the universe.  if given enough time, the universe will gradually die and ultimately be actually dead, unless more energy is put into the universe to maintain it. Another more simple example would be:- When you build a house you put a lot of work and energy into building it. If you then leave the house alone to the natural laws of the universe,  it will first fall into disrepair, end up as a pile of bricks and if left long enough it will ultimately  turn to dust. The laws of the universe do not work upwards but downwards toward decay.

Here is a good example which also demonstrates the folly of the evolution theory: Science knows that, in harmony with the 2nd law of thermodynamics, cosmic rays from outer space bombard our bodies. Because our bodies, at the atomic level are largely space, these rays pass through our bodies and occasionally collide with genes in our cells. As the genes are part of the genetic code, which contains the program that maintains our growth and repair, this damage affects us in the long term. Just as a virus in your computer can progressively damage a piece of code in a program until the program fails completely so this damage at the molecular level in one’s cells causes the genetic program to become corrupted. This progressive deterioration can ultimately have our cells manufacturing faulty material which it uses to maintain our bodies.  If the damage occurs within our sex cells the damage is passed on to our offspring. If this damage is passed to relatives and these choose to marry, then the damage to the offspring of such a incestuous marriage is more greatly affected.

Furthermore, what this fact of life proves, is that evolutionists are completely wrong with their theory. Rather than evolving upwards, the facts show that the human race is deteriorating  and the deterioration is escalating. People have doubted the great ages that the Bible said people lived to in ancient times. When examining our present short lifespans it becomes obvious that the Bible spoke the truth. Mankind’s deterioration was much slower before the Global flood because the canopy of water that surrounded the earth, acted as a protection. The canopy is mentioned in Gen 1:3 (see the link “The Scientific Accuracy of Genesis.” After the canopy collapsed and the flood occurred, The ages of the population rapidly declined until it gradually settled to an average of about 70 or 80 years as the Bible indicated.

Adam and Eve required some partial maintenance, which was supplied by their food and rest.  They also needed to breathe to stay alive. For them to live forever God would have to protect them and ensure that they always had plenty of the necessities of life.  In addition to this God would maintain them indefinitely, provided they were obedient to him, leaving the decision to him regarding what was good or bad for them.  As the creator of life he was quite capable of doing this but the question was:- “Why should he guarantee their lives  if they chose to run their lives independent of his direction and guidance” ?  Imagine, If you built a very good motor vehicle which you were prepared to guarantee for life. Would you uphold such a guarantee if the owner did not follow your directions on how to use it. Guaranteeing a motor car is nothing compared to guaranteeing life.

When they sinned and God told them of what the consequences of their disobedience would lead to it must have been a shattering blow.

(Genesis 3:16-19) . . .To the woman he said: “I shall greatly increase the pain of your pregnancy; in birth pangs you will bring forth children, and your craving will be for your husband, and he will dominate you.” 17 And to Adam he said: “Because you listened to your wife’s voice and took to eating from the tree concerning which I gave you this command, ‘You must not eat from it,’ cursed is the ground on your account. In pain you will eat its produce all the days of your life. 18 And thorns and thistles it will grow for you, and you must eat the vegetation of the field. 19 In the sweat of your face you will eat bread until you return to the ground, for out of it you were taken. For dust you are and to dust you will return.”

Jehovah God the creator of the universe and the laws that the universe runs on, could foresee where this independence would lead to.  Because he had created these laws, in a sense he could say that he was the cause, yet they had choice in the matter. Animals had never received a sentence of death from God but neither had he held out to them a hope of life. Their short lives served his purpose because they maintained the cycles in the earth and enriched the soil by their returning to it. However humans were different, they had been created with the hope of living for ever. As the figurative heart is used in the Bible to denote the motivating force in humans which is based on the desires of the heart, therefore this explains why we do not just accept death but desire to live on.

(Ecclesiastes 3:11) . . .Everything he has made pretty in its time. Even time indefinite he has put in their heart, that mankind may never find out the work that the [true] God has made from the start to the finish.

When animals die they prove that they are subject to the energy laws and the 2nd law particularly. These conservation laws, and especially the 2nd law of thermodynamics work for the death of a person without God doing anything to cause their deaths. Although indirectly the Bible shows  that God brings death upon persons, this is only from the standpoint that he created the laws that work that way. However as laws, there is nothing wrong with them, they are part of the way the universe operates, but God had a better purpose for us which our forefather threw away by his disobedience. This has made it necessary for Jehovah to make other provisions like the ransom provision so as to make it legally possible for God to reverse the effects of the wrong that Adam did. However this is only available for those of mankind that show that they are prepared to listen and follow God’s direction.

When reading the Bible one should always bear in mind that God always refers to himself a doing something because what happens, happens because God has permitted it to happen.

In the following scripture we may ask how did God thrust out his had and touch everything? He did this by permitting Satan to do this.

(Job 1:9-12) . . .At that Satan answered Jehovah and said: “Is it for nothing that Job has feared God? 10 Have not you yourself put up a hedge about him and about his house and about everything that he has all around? The work of his hands you have blessed, and his livestock itself has spread abroad in the earth. 11 But, for a change, thrust out your hand, please, and touch everything he has [and see] whether he will not curse you to your very face.” 12 Accordingly Jehovah said to Satan: “Look! Everything that he has is in your hand. Only against him himself do not thrust out your hand!” So Satan went out away from the person of Jehovah.

As the woman’s perfect body began to run down and these defects were passed on to her children, what would be the result?  Well as their bodies deteriorated childbirth would become more difficult for women. What is more the woman had been created to be a helper for Adam and was made in such way that Adam would naturally be drawn to her and love and cherish her. He was appointed as her head and with them both following God’s direction,  she would be treated well and would feel fulfilled in her God assigned supportive role of helper.

The family arrangement was a wonderful arrangement, and provided the ideal climate for the rearing of children in love. The woman had been created to fulfill this supportive role and therefore it would be most frustrating for her to be dominated by selfish men who would tend to selfishly view her as just a sexual plaything in general. Yet, because of the way she had been designed she would try to find complete fulfillment with husbands, who instead of loving and appreciating her supportive role, would treat the headship principle as an excuse for dominating behavior.

What is significant is that even men who claim that they do not believe in the bible claim this headship principle and right to humiliate and dominate their wives.  In this selfish world,  women have great difficulty in finding fulfillment whether married of not, because  selfish dominant men are the norm, and instead of treating her with the respect and the loving care that ‘God intended her to have, this would be denied her.  This was because she had been designed to find fulfillment in marriage and having children and to have some one who loved her and appreciate her for the cooperative helper role that she was designed for.  Now that humans were no longer following God’s direction and were under Satan’s domination, this was all lost.

The historical record of the abuse of woman and the suffering that they have all endured  showed how right God was.  I have even noticed that one of the problems with abused women, is  that the woman sometimes put up with the abuse  and even blame themselves, thinking that in some way it was justified and was their own fault. What a testimony to the rightness of God’s ways. All of this is the result of the effects of Adam and Eve’s rejection of God’s direction and the subjection of their offspring to the  natural laws of decay.

In this way Satan has managed to delude mankind into believing that marriage is a failure. The truth of the matter is this: The authority provided by the headship principle is only relative. From God’s point of view a man has no right to command his wife to do anything that could cause her to break God’s law and a wife has no obligation to obey commands of men that contradict God’s instructions.  Furthermore, God has commanded the man to treat his wife with honor as a weaker vessel. The illustration in God’s word regarding how one treats a vessel of honor is fitting.

(1 Peter 3:7) . . .YOU husbands, continue dwelling in like manner with them according to knowledge, assigning them honor as to a weaker vessel, the feminine one, since YOU are also heirs with them of the undeserved favor of life, in order for YOUR prayers not to be hindered.

If one possessed a delicate, most precious ornamental vase, one that could be easily damaged. One would treat it with respect and honor, not wishing to damage it any way. Furthermore, when marriage is conducted in the way God’s instruction manual, the Bible says it should be conducted it is truly a wonderful blessing. I can speak from experience. After 50 wonderful years of happy marriage, my wife finally died. I still feel the loss to this day. When looking at Judge Judy on T.V.,  I am shocked at the way men and woman treat one another after living together for a short while. Most of the marriages last no more than a few years. It is obvious to me, that they do not know how a marriage should be conducted.

Many persons feel that God should step in and help them solve their problems. Actually if they studied the Bible correctly and applied its counsel, this would help them solve many problems. Some even blame God for allowing such a position to develop.

Was this God’s fault?  No!  In fact if Jehovah stepped in to protect  them from these ill effects would he not in fact be supporting the idea that independence from God actually works and therefore there was no need to follow his guidance?

How about Adam? Well God had specially planted a garden and park for them to live in. Under Jehovah’s guidance they would have increased and multiplied and spread paradise over the earth.  However now that they had left his guidance and they were ejected into a hostile environment.  Outside the garden of Eden was nature in the raw. It would not willingly respond to Adam’s efforts because he was no longer handling the cultivating work under Jehovah’s direction. With what result? Instead of everything flourishing under his hand he would now struggle with the land in his ignorance while trying to feed himself until he eventually succumbed to the 2nd law and went back to the dust just as animals do. What does history show?  God was proved to be absolutely right?

Remember the Devil promised Adam and Eve that they did not need God to tell them what right and wrong was or as the bible expressed, it to decide what  was “Good or Bad” for them. No! The Devil said that God had lied to them.  He said that they could decide what was good or bad for themselves just as he, the Devil had done, when he rebelled.  Who has history proved to be right? Has the Devil succeeded in leading mankind to prosperity, happiness and success? or has God been found true in that the road for man has been one of pain, frustration, slavery, a struggle to survive and finally death as God had warned?

All that the Devil has been able to do to save his face, is to convince mankind by means of false religion, that we do not really die.  He continues to perpetuate his original lie by implying that God is the one who was actually lying to the woman when he said that she would die, because as he asserts, we actually only appear to die, but in reality we go into another world.  Here again he has added to his original lie,  suggesting that we are not human souls as God had said said we were, when he created Adam, but we have an immortal soul put into us that goes into another world when we appear to die.  So when the little girl cries because her mother has died and cannot understand the injustice that has been brought upon her, she is comforted with the words:- “No mommy has gone to a better place and she is watching over you or God wanted another angel and so he took mommy away” What blasphemy?

What are the true facts?

(Genesis 2:7) . . .And Jehovah God proceeded to form the man out of dust from the ground and to blow into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man came to be a living soul.

If a man becomes a doctor then he is a doctor. If he becomes a living soul then he is a living soul.

(1 Timothy 6:15-16) . . .This [manifestation] the happy and only Potentate will show in its own appointed times, [he] the King of those who rule as kings and Lord of those who rule as lords, 16 the one alone having immortality, who dwells in unapproachable light, whom not one of men has seen or can see. To him be honor and might everlasting. Amen.

After Jesus was taken to heaven, the Bible shows that at the least up to that time he was the only one other than God that possessed immortality. This was God’s gift to him, therefore we ask what happened to all the immortal souls that had apparently died and gone into another world as the clergy of Christendom teach their flocks?

The subject deserves an article in its own right and so I am just touching on it in this article but if one examines the list af articles on my site these points are discussed in more detail in other articles. More than that if you pursue the other articles that I have written you will find that it is now most urgent to get accurate knowlege of the Bible, because God is going to hold an accounting with humanity.
